About Garden Journal
Garden Journal is an independent gardening blog. It exists because most gardening advice online is either too short to be useful or written to sell something. The articles here are deliberately long, written in plain English, and focused on what actually happens in ordinary gardens: heavy clay, small balconies, shady corners, hungry slugs and limited weekends.
Everything published here comes from practical growing rather than theory. Where a method has failed for us, we say so. Where results depend on your climate, soil or aspect, we say that too, because a technique that works beautifully on free-draining sand in a mild coastal garden can be entirely wrong in a cold inland clay plot.
What we write about
Six broad subjects cover almost everything a home gardener needs: getting started, growing vegetables, improving soil and making compost, gardening in containers, encouraging pollinators and other wildlife, and pruning woody plants with confidence. New articles are added regularly and older ones are revised as we learn more.
How this site is funded
Garden Journal is free to read and is supported by advertising. Advertising space is clearly marked, kept out of the middle of sentences, and never determines what we recommend. You can read more in our privacy policy and terms of use.
